Designer Loves : Bright Winter Hues from Vickerey

Here’s my fave piece of work this week from Vickerey. This year, I’m switching things up a little & bringing in lots of handmade, earthy elements. I’m totally digging it! This collection made me think of crisp white snow, soft blue skies… a perfect time for a collection of things that bring a spark to the day. Check out the Bright Winter Hues collection right here »

Faves from 2013…

A little entry to reflect on the little things – MAN o MAN – what a wonderful year. It was crazy, we were hustlin’, but every day was sweet in its very own way. A little journey from the top to bottom, we spent our first month of 2013 on a road trip from Colorado to California (it only costs $86 to get to California from Boulder, CO in a Prius)! Emerald, (the greenish-teal version, anyway) was the color of the year and I was SO in love. Blaise flew my best friend Brittany in for my birthday (the best ever). Jayda turned 70! – We threw the dog’s birthday party of the century. We underwent a HUGE home renovation (more on that when we finish). Boulder underwent extreme flooding (not a fave moment, but a huge one none the less). The Confetti Booth was soooo much fun – so many wonderful memories with my favorite man. We went on lots of beautiful Colorado hikes. Auburn had an ammmmmmmazing football season – our back to back miracle plays will forever be with our fans. And I could squeeze in some much needed art time with my fave lap companion, Kitty. Thank you to all my friends, family, blog readers, volunteers, & fellow Auburn fans (war eagle!) who’ve made this such an amazing year. Cheers to a fabulous 2014!

Y’all – this has been one crrrrrazy year. I’m so thankful for so much right now my heart’s on overload! Just a little note to wish you all the merriest of holidays, & to share this ridiculous Christmas card we created for our friends & family. Blaise is from Hawaii, so after weeks of a terrible Colorado cold spell in December, a sunny Hawaiian holiday was all we could dream of. With love, & an enormous cheers to this beautiful year, Mele Kalikimaka! Thanks for stopping by.

Design Wine Sunshine – The Mood Board

Design, wine, and sunshine are three of my favorite things. High five to the universe for letting them rhyme! Sure – I wanted to add animals, palm trees, family, traveling, laughter, color, warmth … but I figured in the end, I could always loop my loves back around to each other. So here we are – my little moodboard of things that inspire me and guide the visual language for this blog. I’m thinking fun, happy, colorful, design driven, relaxed, surprising, and bright. Voila!

happy emerald 2013!

it’s easy being emerald! one of my favorite moments of January is when Pantone reveals its color of the year. 2013 is emerald, and i must admit, i’ve never loved it more < crazy how Pantone can do that to a designer > ! here are a few things from etsy and around my fave shops to celebrate the color of the year, with a funky style i love. enjoy!

new year, new sunny planner

woooooo! happy 2013, again and again. in prep for an organized schedule, i took my intern Aly’s tips and played with type on my new Moleskine planner. here’s how it rolled…
1. measure your Moleskine and comp up an InDesign doc with super fun type, something meaningful for the year’s plans. (i’m assuming this technique could work on a myriad of different substrates, but Moleskine hardcover journals work really well)

2. here’s the planner i chose from work (we carry Moleskine on all three of my sites!), i LOVE this uplifting yellow, but there are more colors to choose from. grab a ballpoint pen (you’ll need a viscous ink w/lots of sturdy resistance to your hand), your print out, painter’s tape and a fine and fat sharpie.

3. with painters tape, i simply cut out my print and lined it up (taking note of placement with the belly band)

4. begin tracing! damn, i remember loathing the type-trace project in school, but now i absolutely love it. so crazy, but any type dork would understand.
5. you should use a ton of pressure with your pen, so the shine of the ink and deboss shows through like in the 2nd picture.

6. when you’ve finished outlining all your letters (this took a few breaks so my hand could chill out – and so i could enjoy my wine, of course) you can remove the printout and painters tape. toss it! you won’t need it anymore, and you can start to 7. outline the debossed letters with a fine point sharpie. a blind deboss would be super cool too, but i preferred the contrast on this piece.

8. here’s a dorky picture of me celebrating almost finishing the outline. 9. the fun part – color it all in! with a big ol’ fat sharpie.

10. and voila!

here’s to a beautiful 2013. oh! and i also wanted to mention why i love this weekly planner format. each day has several lines, with one week in a spread. i can plan out my posts by title, and still have room for notes on content. a super weird thing i love to do is to write all tentative posts in pencil, and then erase and rewrite in pen when they’re posted. it’s very gratifying!

snowflake frenzy

i’ve recently been tasked with finding a super-quick way to add holiday cheer to our entire site. feeling a little overwhelmed in all the holiday whirlwind, i got back to basics and started to toss snowflakes around. turned out that my boss loved it! i gave them some gold glitter for a little dimension, played with scale and composition for hundreds of these little guys, and here it is! makes me feel all sorts of merry & bright : )
