Type Study : FUTURA

Futura has been a favorite typeface of mine since I first studied & traced it in 2004 (say what?). The perfectly geometric (stunning) letterforms are clean, refreshing, & modern with chic style. In the design world, I’d say it’s a great go-to when your client wants a minimalist or simple, yet professional sans-serif, with more design than Helvetica. Here’s a look at this typeface in one of my fave wintertime mantras from Albert Camus :

futura-type-study_01 futura-type-study_02See? Futura has a huge family of weights to play with, within the same exquisite blueprint. I love that it can be super clean, or super bold – but still retains a cool, minimalist style.  It knows how to have fun, too – kind of like the dream girl that’s as smart as she is funny + beautiful.

A couple pieces of advice, when working with Futura :
1. Your “»” will always be disproportionate to the x-height of any of the font’s sizes. It will also set pretty low. In order to feel balanced, I always increase the “»” size, and drop the baseline until it feels nicely centered.
2. Watch the kerning with your 0’s. Since they’re so fat, they stretch with a wide leading that needs to be trimmed.
Here’s one of my fave type geek videos showing the precision of Futura’s creation. Enjoy!

Type Study : Dogs as Typefaces

Picture 1

I have loved this poster, found via Swiss-Miss for years now, so I thought it would be a fun little way to start the week for dog and typography lovers alike. I agree with some of the comments to her post, that the Bulldog would be perfect as a Cooper Black, perhaps a Doberman would be better suited to Fraktur? Find this Dogs as Typefaces poster here »

And just for kicks, here’s my Labrador, Jayda, as Rockwell. A happy, sturdy slab serif, who’s strong, perhaps a little chubby, & lovable! …

Which typeface would your dog be?

Heck Yes! Introducing Neutraface Slab (All the Typographers go wild!)

2643

2647

2645 getimageHouse Industries, you rock my type-lovin’ world.
Hello, Neutraface Slab! How could I not entertain the idea of bringing this little number into my arsenal? I have an enormous and quite ridiculous love for their first champion, Neutraface. I love its radiant euro-mod personality and ever-expanding width explorations. Now, I can long for the newest arrival of their stellar Neutraface family, Neutraface Slab. It’s a perfect example of why they say, “If you liked it then you shoulda put a slab on it.” – Or at least I’m sure that’s why House decided they needed to take the plunge. Cheers, to the new addition, Neutraface Slab »  I’m in terrible typographic love with you!

Type Study : American Typewriter

design-wine-sunshine-american-typewriter-type-studydesign-wine-sunshine-american-typewriter-type-study-ampersand Here’s one of my lonnnnng time faves, American Typewriter. I’m usually not into mock-style typefaces, but I’ve always felt that American Typewriter was built well, with a bold dash of curiosity and gumption. In the case that your client demands a typewriter look, I strongly suggest you forgo any option with a scraggly stroke or damaged finials and opt for this clean, fun, and beautiful body of work. It’s impressive to pull off stylized without being gimmicky – kudos, Joel & Tony! I passed up my most-loved opportunity for a quick fox study for this wild sight of the Condensed Light’s ampersand. Look at her! She’s a classy lady. Grab your own family of American Typewriter right here. And as for the mermaid, the only path I have to her is this pin… may she forever live in mystery.

Type Study : Brandon Grotesque

Design Wine Sunshine : Type Study : Brandon Grotesque #typographyDesign Wine Sunshine : Type Study : Brandon Grotesque #typography

Here’s another typeface that I’m always throwing down – why yes, it’s Brandon Grotesque! Designed by Hannes Von Dohren back in ’09, Brandon { I’ll call him for short } has such a handsome set of geometric characters built in perfect weights and x-heights for titles, subtitles, and body copy alike. I currently use him in my studio for MoleskineUS, but now that you’ve studied his perfect G’s and N’s – and I can’t even explain my excitement for the perfectly spunky tail on his Q, you’ll see Brandon Grotesque everywhere. It’s like the Helvetica of the two thousand and teens. Since he’s a brut sans-serif, watch & kern your A’s and O’s, just like Futura. And watch his black weight when you’re below 20px on the web, I’ve found I usually have to change my alias between the weights at different heights. but other than that – have fun! Brandon may look all serious & professional, but he has funny quirks all over. I especially love him in all caps with a wide letterspacing – go figure. Find Brandon Grotesque for purchase (plus a damn good brochure!) right here. The lovely image of the catamaran lounger (exactly where I’d love to be right now) was found here. Cheers!
